Standing in the meta

Tier A 9th of 30 — 2017 tournament tier list from dissidia.wiki (half matchup values, half expert player votes).

Kuja is ranked 9th (tier A) on the 2017 tier list. The wiki's overview is unwritten, so the sources provide no qualitative player comment on that placement.

Overview

Kuja is an aerial mage zoner: his bravery attacks share their data between ground and air versions, and their follow-ups change with the distance to the opponent. Players of the day on the GameFAQs board described him as one of the hardest characters to pick up but also one of the best — xoAxelox predicted as early as 2011 that he would land in High Tier once an official tier list was published — a forecast the competitive tier list has since confirmed.

His game rests on safe pokes and harassment: Snatch Shot at mid range, Remote Flare (unblockable) at long range, Seraphic Star as a safe poke with strong Absorb, and Strike Energy as a fast punish up close. Kuja attacks while moving, and his glide feeds the mindgames around the moment and the angle of engagement. Distance determines what follows each bravery attack (Wall Rush or Chase): mastering that, along with assist conversions, is the difference between a harmless Kuja and a suffocating one.

In exchange, his vertical tracking is mediocre — players of the day called him “vertically challenged”: he has to stay level with the opponent, or force them back to his level. His EX Mode, nerfed since the first Dissidia (a less reliable Auto Magic), was judged so weak that period sets favoured the assist instead; and several of his moves are punishable on block: the Holy follow-ups stagger him when they are blocked, and Snatch Shot can be reflected back at him.

Strengths

  • Safe pokes at every distance: Snatch Shot at mid range, the unblockable Remote Flare at long range, and Seraphic Star, a safe poke with strong Absorb that opponents end up running into — constant pressure for little risk.
  • Offensive mobility: Kuja attacks while moving, and his glide sustains the mindgames around the moment and the angle of engagement.
  • An identical set on the ground and in the air: his bravery attacks share their data between versions, which simplifies learning and frees up slots for the aerial game.
  • Excellent assist conversions: calling the assist on the first hit of a bravery attack (Strike Energy above all) converts into an Assist Chase then Flare Star or Ultima — the most reliable way to land his HP attacks.
  • Remote Flare fills the assist gauge safely and catches opponents in the middle of an HP attack.

Weaknesses

  • Mediocre vertical tracking (“vertically challenged”): he suffers as soon as the opponent plays above or below him, and constantly has to recreate a horizontal plane.
  • An EX Mode judged very weak by players of the day after the Auto Magic nerf: hybrid builds were seen as poorly suited and Side by Side was doubted — the assist was preferred.
  • Punishable on block: Strike Energy and Snatch Blow (Holy attacks) stagger Kuja when they are blocked, Snatch Shot is reflected by a successful block, and Burst Energy is cut straight through by physical attacks.
  • Ring Holy is easily reflected by a simple dash through it — the scattered projectiles then come back at Kuja from several directions.
  • A steep learning curve: managing distance, follow-up variants and placement — not a character to judge on the first few hours.

Bravery attacks

List

All of Kuja's bravery attacks exist on the ground and in the air, with shared data. Outside Remote Flare and Ring Holy, their follow-ups change with the distance to the opponent.

Burst Energy 15FRanged Low

Opens the attack with Flare at close range; the distance to the opponent changes the follow-up (Close and Far variants with distinct damage, priorities and effects: Wall Rush from close, Chase from afar). It is Kuja's fastest bravery attack (15F). As with his other variant bravery attacks, the number of hits depends on positioning and can climb to 16 against an opponent cornered in a corner.

EX Mode: Trance! & EX Burst

Kuja's EX Mode, “Trance!”, grants Regen, Critical Boost, Hyper Glide and Auto Magic. Hyper Glide, activated by holding X in the air, keeps him at altitude longer than the normal glide.

Auto Magic, permanently active in EX Mode, automatically casts Holy and Flare when Kuja jumps, falls, touches the ground or glides: Holy on jumps/falls and while gliding (light orbs, Melee Low, 1 base damage), Flare during aerial jumps (dark red orbs, Ranged Low, 1) and on landing (an explosion, Ranged Low, 3).

EX Burst : Final Requiem is a chain of attacks that grows stronger with each hit: mashing Circle increases the force of every strike (7 initial base damage, 100 in total, Magical type).

Gameplan & advanced tech

The gameplan that emerges from the GameFAQs threads of the day (2011-2012): play safe and poke without exposing yourself — Snatch Shot at mid range, Remote Flare at long range, Strike Energy as a fast punish when the opponent sticks to you. Stay on the same vertical level as the opponent and, rather than going to fetch them, force them to come: a Force Symphony placed from above makes them leave the ground, and Ultima can be cast then circled around (camera reset with Select) to lure the impatient into it or to create space.

Conversions go through the assist and through blocking: call the assist on the first hit of a bravery attack (Strike Energy above all) then convert the Assist Chase into Flare Star — or into Ultima with an assist that sends the opponent back to the ground, such as Jecht. Flare Star also lands on the stagger from a block against opponents who air-dash into Kuja. The reference solo combo links Snatch Shot to Strike Energy with an RDC at the moment the second shot connects. Assists cited at the time: Sephiroth and Aerith first, Jecht for sending the opponent groundwards.

The slots concentrate in the air: the typical period sets line up Strike Energy, Snatch Shot and Remote Flare as aerial bravery attacks, with Flare Star, Seraphic Star and Ultima or Force Symphony as HP attacks, and an almost empty ground — Kuja works even with no ground attack equipped at all. Learn Seraphic Star's distance by heart so as to place it every time, and only use Force Symphony for its first orb: insisting on bombarding exposes him for nothing.

Character-specific tech

Steering the follow-up with the stick

The variant bravery attacks can be steered: tilting the analogue stick towards the opponent or away from them at the moment of the first hit chooses what follows (Chase or Wall Rush) instead of leaving it to chance. It takes getting used to — the camera can distort the reading of distance, hence the habit of recentring it with Select.

Snatch Shot > RDC > Strike Energy

The main solo combo of the day: zone with Snatch Shot then, at the moment the second shot connects, an RDC (rapid dodge cancel) links into Strike Energy for heavy bravery damage.

Assist confirm on the first hit

Land the first hit of Snatch Shot, Snatch Blow, Burst Energy or Strike Energy, call the assist without finishing the follow-up, then convert: Assist Chase into Flare Star with a Chase assist such as Sephiroth, or Ultima/Flare Star while Jecht pins the opponent to the ground.

Flare Star on block

Against an opponent who air-dashes into Kuja: block, then cast Flare Star during their stagger for fast HP damage — its main use outside the assist, along with the post-Assist Chase conversion.

Sources: gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/605802-dissidia-012-duodecim-fi

Ultima as a control zone

Cast Ultima then circle around the spell while it is active: persistent opponents get drawn into it, and the cloud creates space to breathe. Outside that role, Ultima remains the preferred conversion at long range after an assist.

Sources: gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/605802-dissidia-012-duodecim-fi

Force Symphony: set & drop

Use only the first orb: place it above the opponent to force them off the ground or into a reaction, then follow up. Prolonging the volley by holding the button mostly multiplies Kuja's own vulnerability.

Documented solo combo routes

His biggest combos live in EX Mode, but several routes exist outside it: Snatch Shot > dodge cancel > Strike Energy or Burst Energy; Snatch Shot (the second shot only, long range) > DC > Flare Star or Snatch Blow; Snatch Blow from afar > DC > Burst Energy; Force Symphony (delayed hit) > Strike Energy; in EX Mode, the Air Jump, Glide and Fall loops convert into Flare Star or Ultima.

Matchups

No character-by-character analysis has survived for Kuja — the wiki's matchups page is a stub and the threads of the day reason by profile. Against guard specialists such as Firion or Exdeath, Remote Flare is the key tool: the attack cannot be blocked, which neutralises their defensive plan. Snatch Blow goes through certain projectiles (Flare, for instance) and shines in narrow corridors such as the rooms of Pandaemonium, as a dodge punish — but it is easily blocked.

Conversely, anything that imposes a vertical game troubles him: his mediocre vertical tracking obliges him to stay level with the opponent or to bring them back to his level (Force Symphony from above; Burst Energy instantly joins the opponent's vertical plane, at the cost of low range and priority). Against good blockers, beware the backlash of his own moves: the Holy follow-ups stagger him if they are blocked and Snatch Shot can be reflected back at him — the Flare attacks do not stagger, but they are cut straight through by physical attacks.

Builds

The wiki's builds section is unwritten: it contains nothing but raw tables. A single complete build appears there, built around the Seal of Lufenia special effect: Terra's Legacy as the weapon, Lufenian pieces (Lufenian Dirk, Lufenian Headband, Lufenian Vest), Zidane assist, Rubicante summon, and accessories mixing Hyper Ring, Earring, Battle Hammer, Summon Unused, Pre-EX Revenge, three White Drop, White Gem and Glutton, for 10626 HP, 877 BRV, 178 ATK and 184 DEF at 450 CP. The wiki notes that the total capacity point cost assumes the Equip Glitch is used (the “Gear” abilities).

Assist synergies

Kuja as an assist

Kuja is one of the very best assists in the game — ranked Top tier on the assist tier list (Muggshotter) — and he stayed that way throughout the title's competitive life. His bravery attacks hold up well in combos, with good hit stun and Assist Chase finishes, which makes him synergise with most characters. The base damage of his bravery attacks is excellent (which also applies to EX gauge depletion on hit) and he whiff punishes aerial attacks effectively. He is versatile enough to serve as a starting point for learning the assist system.

His flaws: limited safety against the two levels of Assist Change — his melee priority bravery attacks lose to LV2 Change, and his medium to long animations expose him to Assist Lock attempts. The upward knockback of his moves also limits ground combos and setup opportunities: players who optimise that area will not always pick him. Conversely, for Kefka and Ultimecia, Kuja is one of the only genuinely viable assists in competition, if not the only one.

As a BRV assist: Snatch Blow (ground, 35F) is a multi-hit that holds the opponent in place before sending them into the air; its long duration on hit is ideal for filler moves (Garland's Bardiche, Cloud's Firaga, single-hit HP Wall Rushes such as Firion's Straightarrow or Squall's Aerial Circle). Slow to start, it has to be called early and whiff punishes poorly, but the return hit has a hitbox that can connect behind him; since Kuja stays fairly static, he needs protecting from escapes with LV1 Assist Change. Strike Energy (air, 17F) is the safe bet: fast, good lateral reach, slight vertical tracking, an upward Assist Chase finish, 50 base damage and generous hit stun that makes projectile or HP follow-ups easier — an excellent whiff punisher and combo extender, even if its hitbox connects poorly very low down.

As an HP assist: Flare Star (ground, Ranged High) serves mostly as a combo starter safe against LV2 Assist Change and as a ground dodge punish that is hard to contest, valuable when both players are stuck at two full bars, notably at killing bravery. Force Symphony (air, Ranged High) fires projectiles in a line from top to bottom: a situational checkmate in a Chase sequence and a very good disengagement tool in a scramble, each projectile being a single-hit HP attack with a small area of effect and Assist Chase. Overall, Kuja offers power and flexibility exactly where an assist needs them most: conversions, punishes, interruptions and relative safety against LV2 Assist Change.
